Abstract Emotion reactivity (ER) captures the depth, sensitivity, and endurance of our emotional reactions, while deviation from a balanced time perspective (DBTP) characterizes our inflexibility and rigidity in adhering to specific time frames. This study investigates how ER and DBTP might predict the symptoms of depression and anxiety and DBTP’s mediating role between ER and the symptoms of anxiety and depression in a three-wave longitudinal investigation. Data from 148 university students (82 males, 55.4%) with the age range of 18–29 (Mage = 19.92, SDage = 1.36) were collected at three time intervals using Emotion Reactivity Scale, Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Future Negative subscale, Generalized [...]
Abstract Emotional schema therapy (EST) is an approach that aims to regulate emotions, thus alleviating mental health problems. Although emotional schema therapy (EST) was used for various mental health problems, no review has been conducted on the evidence of this intervention so far. Therefore, this review aimed to examine the evidence base for the EST in treating adults diagnosed with mental health problems using randomized controlled trials in clinical settings and subsequently evaluated the quality of these trials. This systematic review adhered to the general principles published by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD). Searches of five databases (PsycINFO, EBSCO, [...]
Abstract We previously found that rumination maintains obsessive–compulsive (OC) symptoms. Our goal was to explore the moderating roles of three characteristics in the immediate and intermediate effects of rumination on OC symptoms: trait rumination, severity of comorbid depressive symptoms, and the tendency to misinterpret the occurrence of unwanted intrusive thoughts as meaningful. We reanalyzed our previous study’s data and explored in a sample of 145 individuals diagnosed with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) whether any of the three characteristics moderated the observed immediate and intermediate effects of rumination on OC symptoms. Only the tendency to misinterpret unwanted intrusive thoughts moderated the immediate [...]
Abstract Psychological interventions are important tools for addressing different mental disorders around the world, and considering cultural diversity during the implementation of psychological intervention may lead to improved outcomes. This scoping review updates on the knowledge about the cultural adaptation of cognitive behavioral therapy in the Arab world. This study included 21 studies about the cultural adaptation of cognitive behavioral therapy and other types of psychological interventions that have been implemented for Arab people. The sources of information were PUBMED, Web of Science Journal, CINHA, and search engine Google. For scoping review, the PRISMA-ScR framework was followed. The results showed [...]
Abstract Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) have scarcely been studied in adolescents. The present study investigates EMSs in two clinical samples of 12–22-year-olds recruited from patients entering a specialized adolescent psychiatry clinic [n = 190] or a pediatric clinic [n = 119] in Finland. The endorsement of EMSs was compared between these samples, and the association of EMSs with perceived parental bonding was assessed. EMSs were assessed with the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form 2-Extended and particularly affectionless control parenting style with the Parental Bonding Instrument. The main analyses were conducted using general linear modeling. Significant differences existed between the two samples, with most EMSs and [...]
Nearly 65% of youth experience trauma, and up to one-third of youth with trauma exposure face profound mental health sequelae. There remains a need to elucidate factors that contribute to psychopathology following trauma exposure and optimize interventions for youth who do not benefit sufficiently from existing treatments. Here, we probe safety signal learning (SSL), which is a mechanism of fear reduction that leverages learned safety to inhibit fear in the presence of threat-associated stimuli and has been shown to attenuate fear via a hippocampal-cingulate––specifically, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC)––pathway. [...]
Commenting on our systematic review and meta-analysis on the reporting and representation of race/ethnicity in randomized controlled trials of ADHD medications1, Jurek and Leaune2 thoughtfully highlighted important legal barriers that hinder the reporting of race/ethnicity data in research in some countries, focusing on France as an example. They concluded that this situation calls for a tangible action to change the status quo. We thank Jurek and Leaune for pointing out this crucial issue and could not agree more. [...]
The recent publication by Riccioni et al. “Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: Reporting and Representation of Race/Ethnicity in 310 Randomized Controlled Trials of Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder Medications” highlights the gaps and disparities in the inclusion and reporting of racial and ethnic data in clinical research, with the example of research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) pharmacological treatment.1 The authors emphasized the underreporting of data on race/ethnicity in RCTs on ADHD medications and the overrepresentation of White individuals. [...]
Today, it is increasingly common to encounter gender diverse youth in our communities, schools, and clinical practices. It is estimated that approximately 0.7% to 2.7% of youth identify as transgender and gender diverse,1 and transgender youth are disproportionately impacted by poor mental health outcomes, including depression and suicidal ideation.2 Amid debates about gender diversity, children and adolescents are often caught in the crossfire. How can we—clinicians, parents, educators, and advocates—better support youth to be their most authentic selves? [...]
