Abstract Interoceptive sensitivity (IS) –the beliefs related to noticing, appraising and regulating bodily signals – and Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) – the tendency to interpret anxiety-related symptoms negatively –have been frequently associated with psychopathology. Our goal was to evaluate the associations between these constructs and psychopathological symptoms using network analysis. Data from 438 participants were collected online, assessing psychopathology with the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), IS with the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA-2), and AS with the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3). We found inter-dimensional connections between: i) the Cognitive AS and the psychoticism and obsession-compulsion traits of the SCL-90; ii) the [...]
Abstract There has been a call for innovative, low-cost and simple treatments for people who have experienced trauma. The proposal that targeting intrusive memories could have the downstream effect of reducing other posttrauma symptoms or preventing their emergence has prompted the development of single-symptom interventions for intrusive memories, drawing on cognitive neuroscience models of memory consolidation and reconsolidation. To understand their full therapeutic impact, evaluations of the effectiveness of single-symptom interventions should include measures of broad outcomes (i.e. functioning), in addition to intrusion-related measures. This narrative review examined whether intervention studies targeting intrusive memories after real-world trauma measured functioning as [...]
Abstract Interest in psychological interventions for obesity treatment has been increasing. This study examines the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) alongside standard diet therapy in reducing body mass ındex (BMI). Additionally, it investigates the predictive role of emotion regulation and problem-solving sessions integrated into the CBGT protocol. Participants with a BMI of 30 or higher were assigned to diet-only, diet + CBGT, or control groups. Measurements were taken at baseline, post-therapy, and six months later. Results showed significant BMI reductions in diet and diet + CBGT groups, with no changes in the control group. Six months later, the diet + CBGT group maintained their [...]
Abstract Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a promising treatment option for binge eating disorder (BED). It addresses affective and behavioural patterns such as difficulties in emotional management (e.g., emotion dysregulation) and the loss of control in eating behaviours (e.g., emotional eating). However, conclusions drawn from the literature were identified to be largely confounded by the overgeneralisation of eating disorders (e.g., treating BED and bulimia nervosa as the same diagnosis) and the mix of different subtypes of DBT (e.g., group-based treatment; self-guided treatment). This review examined various treatment outcomes in individuals with BED. Ten eligible studies were identified in a systematic [...]
Abstract Individuals who ruminate are likely to exhibit behavioral inactivation. In this study, we explored this mechanism by focusing on the processing mode theory, which divides thought style into two modes: abstract and analytic thought (AAT) and concrete and experiential thought (CET). Based on the existing rumination theories, we focused on the difference in the effect of processing modes on behavioral activation according to the level of dysphoria. We conducted a one-year longitudinal survey with 1,030 Japanese adults at five measurement points. We measured processing modes and behavioral activations using questionnaires and analyzed within-person bidirectional associations using a random intercept [...]
The accessibility of manualized youth psychodynamic psychotherapies1–3 facilitates their use in hospital-based and community clinic settings. Implementation of their component interventions within a single patient encounter can expand their utility throughout the hospital, including in emergency departments, pediatric floors, and partial hospitalization and inpatient psychiatry services. Here, we share a core intervention drawn from one of these manualized works, Regulation Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C),2 named the Triangle of Conflict, or Conflict Triangle. [...]
Previous research suggests that adult survivors of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) experience mental health problems following their infection. This study examines long-term mental health consequences of EVD for child survivors, and those affected by EVD but not themselves infected, compared to controls. This study also examines the mediating effects of caregiver mental health on children’s mental health outcomes. [...]
Adolescence is often likened to a rollercoaster—a thrilling ride filled with unpredictable highs, sudden drops, and daring twists and turns. For some teenagers, this metaphor becomes even more poignant as they navigate the challenges of burgeoning mood disorders and substance use disorders. These struggles can amplify the turbulence of adolescence, making the ride feel overwhelming not just for the teens experiencing it, but also for the families and caregivers supporting them. This Media Forum reviews two resources for adolescents and transitional age youth, one focusing on adolescents with bipolar disorder and the other on youth addictive disorders. [...]
Nearly 50 years of research have carefully documented daily living skills (DLS) deficits in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which emerge early in life, appear to persist across development, and seem to affect people across this very heterogeneous condition.1 The terminology and measures used to quantify life skills challenges vary across conditions, but such deficits are also common in intellectual disability (ID), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), internalizing and externalizing disorders, and schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. [...]
Climate change (CC) is a global public health crisis. The historical exploitation of natural resources by colonial powers has accelerated CC such that, the top 1% of global greenhouse gas emitters had carbon footprints greater than 50 tons of CO2 each. This figure is more than 1,000 times greater than those of the bottom 1% of emitters1. Further, disparities in greenhouse gas emissions across income groups are considerable. CC amplifies extant socioeconomic and health inequities, and acts as a threat multiplier with a disproportionate impact on marginalized and vulnerable populations. [...]
