Abstract This study aims to examine the characteristics of interpretation bias among students with depressive tendencies under emotional priming conditions and compare with normal college students. This study employed behavioral experiments to gather data on the responses of college students with depressive tendency (depression tendency groups) and psychologically healthy college students (normal control group) in word association tasks. The tasks were conducted under positive and negative emotional priming conditions to investigate the interpretation bias characteristics of individuals with depressive tendency. Additionally, an interpretation bias intervention was implemented to enhance positive cognitive function, weaken negative cognition, and strengthen the inhibition of [...]
Abstract The main purpose of this study is to adapt the Affective Style Questionnaire (ASQ) into Turkish. It also aims to examine the mediating role of affective styles between attachment styles and depression. The study was conducted on a total of three different samples (N1 = 261; N2 = 190; N3 = 263). The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the construct validity of the scale and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) was used to test the convergent validity. As a result of the CFA conducted in all three samples, the model was found to have adequate fit values. In the convergent validity, ASQ [...]
Abstract Self-construal, defined as the way by which individuals define themselves, is classified into two types: independent self-construal, emphasizing autonomy and uniqueness, and interdependent self-construal, emphasizing connections with others. Largely investigated in cross-cultural contexts, self-construal has been found to be associated with social anxiety symptoms. While Singelis’s original Self-Construal Scale (SCS) has been widely used to measure self-construal, extant literature has suggested that the SCS lacks validity evidence, prompting the development of a 10-item with enhanced psychometric properties. This study validated the 10-item SCS in a Korean sample by examining the factor structure, measurement invariance across Korean and U.S. samples, and [...]
Abstract This study examined the efficacy of a 2-year anxiety management intervention integrated with a reading intervention for struggling readers in upper-elementary grades on anxiety outcomes. The study randomly assigned 128 struggling readers to one of three conditions: (a) reading intervention with anxiety management intervention (RANX), (b) reading intervention with math fact practice, an attention control, (RMATH), and (c) business-as-usual comparison (BaU). Findings demonstrated promising results for students in the RANX condition, particularly compared with the BaU condition. However, findings were not always statistically significant suggesting the need for additional adequately powered trials. Secondary analyses among students beginning with average [...]
Abstract Cognitive behavioral therapy, prolonged exposure, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing are effective treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They emphasize the processing of trauma-related memories and exposure as central components in treatment. In contrast, the metacognitive model emphasizes that PTSD is caused by a persistent negative thinking style, and the goal is to find alternative coping strategies and modify metacognitive beliefs without the use of exposure. In a quasi-experimental A-B design, patients diagnosed with PTSD received either MCT (n = 32) or TAU “treatment as usual” (n = 28) consisting of exposure-based treatments and were tested on different measures of symptoms. The [...]
The theme of disconnection is perhaps one that resonates for many of us when we recall our experiences of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during the height of the global pandemic that Māori Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr. Hinemoa Elder wrote Wawata—Moon Dreaming to counter this disconnection: “To open up our moon dreams, for a deeper, more affectionate and more intimate connection with ourselves and others” (p. 11). Her book speaks to that “potent, fierce drive to connect” (p. [...]
Adolescents face significant changes in many domains of their daily lives that require them to flexibly adapt to changing environmental demands. To shift efficiently among various goals, adolescents must reconfigure their brains, disengaging from previous tasks and engaging in new activities. [...]
Starting in March 2020, we went into a period of collective social isolation that seemed like it would never end. As we mostly stayed in our own spaces, seeing others only by screens or through a distance, we at times lost connections. As we continue to move back to reconnecting and rebuilding our social networks, it represents a time to reflect back on what happened before. We can see the impact that this isolation had on mental health and our ability to reconnect with others post pandemic. Of course, the hope is that going through a pandemic such as this [...]
Previous work has found increased endorsement of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) among marginalized racial and ethnic groups. According to social determinants frameworks, marginalized groups are at increased risk for exposure to socio-environmental risk factors, including systemic factors (eg, poverty and poor housing conditions) and social stressors (eg, discrimination). We examine the extent to which environmental risk factors and stress account for associations between racial/ethnic groups with PLEs. [...]
The Surgeon General’s Advisory (2023)1 has underscored the importance of research into the impact of social media content on adolescents’ mental health. Social media platforms such as Instagram are increasingly used by adolescents to seek mental health services and support, highlighting the positive role that these platforms can play in facilitating access to resources and community support.1 Studies suggest that social media platforms can promote help-seeking behaviors among youth, potentially serving as access points to mental health care.2 With social media becoming the primary source of mental health information for adolescents, especially post-pandemic, various digital strategies have emerged to engage [...]
