UFPel is among the top 60 universities in Latin American according to the evaluation carried out by the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE), which compares universities dedicated to research. At the World University Rankings 2019 (CWUR), UFPel is ranked 16 among the 20 Brazilian institutions that appear on the list of the best 1000 in the world. Only three universities from the state of Rio Grande do Sul are in the list.

The listing with the 150 best institutions from 12 countries was published last June 18. Seven universities in Rio Grande do Sul (out of more than 1200 observed by THE) appear in the ranking. UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) appears in the 11th position; PUCRS (Pontifícia Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in 20th, UFSM (Federal University of Santa Maria) in 46th; UFPel is between positions 51 and 60; Unisinos (Universidade do Vale dos Sinos) appears between positions 61 and 70 and UCS (Universidade de Caxias do Sul) and UFCSPA (Federal University of Health Sciences from Porto Alegre appears between positions 100 and 150.

UFPel ranked 886 in the world evaluation and 16 in the Brazilian ranking. From Rio Grande do Sul, only two other universities are in the list: UFRGS, ranking 398 and UFSM, 927.
