Ethanol testing is a method used to assess seed quality; however, this test is limited to methodologies that may be subject to dispute, as it relies on measurements obtained from adapted equipment. Therefore, the present invention refers to a low-cost breathalyzer for seeds. To initiate the development of the ethanol measuring device, a PIC Intermediate Kit was acquired, along with an MQ-3 sensor (Datasheet) and an ATmega 328p microcontroller, in addition to a series of electronic components for the development of a basic circuit capable of measuring resistance variations.
The data generated will be stored in the microcontroller, which will be connected to a display to allow visualization of the results. The entire system will be powered by an electrical source to ensure its autonomy during use. The seeds will remain in a sealed container, from which a known quantity of air will be extracted and transferred to another container containing the sensor. Once the air comes into contact with the sensor, the ethanol concentration will be measured, making it possible to assess the seed’s qualitative state based on the amount of ethanol released under anaerobic conditions.

The CO₂ test is a method used to evaluate seed respiration and, consequently, deterioration. In this context, the development of a dedicated device becomes essential to ensure a rapid and efficient determination of seed vigor. Therefore, the present invention refers to a low-cost CO₂ sensor, produced using accessible materials. For the development of the device, an Arduino Kit was acquired, along with various electronic components and a CO₂ sensor capable of measuring resistance variations caused by surrounding CO₂. This sensor, integrated with an analog-to-digital converter, transforms the resistance variations into voltage signals.
The data generated is stored in a microcontroller, which is connected to a display where the results are shown. The entire system is powered by an electrical source to ensure operational autonomy. The seeds are placed in a sealed container along with the CO₂ sensor. The CO₂ released by seed respiration is quantified by the sensor, making it possible to assess the qualitative state of the seeds.
