History

ESSeTe

In October 2006, the I ESeTe – Meeting on Selenium and Tellurium was held at the Hotel Dall’Onder in Bento Gonçalves – RS (http://w3.ufsm.br/esete/), coordinated by Prof. Ernesto S. Lang (UFSM). From this first meeting there was a biannual holding of this event in different places in Brazil. The second event occurred in 2008 in Campos do Jordão – SP, coordinated by Prof. Helio Stefani (USP). The third one, organized by Prof. Antonio L. Braga (UFSC), took place in Florianópolis – SC, in 2010. In 2012, counting on several foreign participants, Prof. Eder J. Lenardão (UFPel) organized the fourth meeting of the series in Torres – RS. In 2014, Prof. Sailer S. dos Santos took over the event, which was held in Santa Maria – RS. In 2016, the event coordinated by Prof. Paulo H. Schneider (UFRGS) returned to the city of Bento Gonçalves and was held at Villa Michelon Hotel, Vale dos Vinhedos (Vineyard Valley).

During this period the news about this series of encounters spread to the entire community that works in this area, and with this occurred several fundamental changes in the characteristics of these events. Among these changes, we can mention the internationalization of the event as well as the inclusion of topics related to the element sulfur, which belongs to the same chemical family. Taking this into account, at the last meeting it was decided to officialize the inclusion of this element in the name of the event, which became the “Meeting on Sulfur, Selenium and Tellurium – ESSeTe” (acronym in Portuguese).

WSeS Red Cat

The SeS Redox and Catalysis is an international network for the development of multidisciplinary research projects connected to sulfur, selenium and other Redox catalysts. The activities of the network have begun in 2011 at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Perugia (Italy) and rapidly grew to involve scientists from around the world: Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Poland, Japan, Uruguay, Morocco, China, Spain, Germany and United Kingdom. The network is coordinated by an international council led by Prof. Claudio Santi (Italy) and composed by Prof. Carl Schiesser (Australia) Prof. João Batista da Rocha (Brazil), Prof. Raphael Radi (Uruguay), Prof. Jozef Drabowicz (Poland), Prof. Michio Iwaoka (Japan), Prof. Michael J. Davies (Denmark), Prof. B. Mugesh (India), Prof. Eder J. Lenardão (Brazil) and Prof. Vito Lippolis (Italy). The International Network is based on the spontaneous aggregation of local groups or networks that will be able to share their interests in this field of research with their expertise and, where appropriate, infrastructure and equipment.

Since 2012, the network has been holding a workshop (WSeS RedCat) that aims to involve its members and the community of researchers and students dedicated to the topic of organocalcogens (synthesis, biochemistry and new materials), giving priority to the participation of young students . The first four editions were held in Perugia, Italy, while the fifth edition took place at Tokai University (Hiratsuka, Japan) and the sixth took place at the University of Science and Technology of Wroclaw (Poland) in September 2017.
