History

The Symposium on Ecology, Genetics, and Evolution of Drosophila has been held every two years since 1999 and has already established itself as the most important event for meeting and debating of the Brazilian drosophilists community. This event has been attended by guests and collaborators from other countries in South America, North America, and Europe. The first edition was in the city of Rio de Janeiro, with the coordination of Dr. Blanche Christine Bitner-Mathé (UFRJ), with the support of Dr. Jean David (CNRS, France), a longtime collaborator of the scientific research with Drosophila in Brazil. Since then, the main research groups with Drosophila in Brazil have been engaged in the organization of the events presented below:

1999: Rio de Janeiro (RJ), coordinated by Dr. Blanche Christine Bitner-Mathé (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro). 

2001: São José do Rio Preto (SP), coordinated by Drs. Hermione E. M. C. Bicudo, Marlene K. Kobayashi and Lilian Madi-Ravazzi (Universidade Estadual Paulista). 

2003: Porto Alegre (RS), coordinated by Dr. Vera L. S. Valente Gaiesky (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul). 

2005: Campinas (SP), coordinated by Dr. Louis Bernard Klaczko (Universidade Estadual de Campinas). 

2007: Ribeirão Preto (SP), coordinated by Drs. Fábio de Melo Sene and Maura H. Manfrin (Universidade de São Paulo). 

2009: Florianópolis (SC), coordinated by Dr. Paulo R. P. Hofmann (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina). 

2011: Belém (PA), coordinated by Dr. Marlúcia B. Martins (Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi). 

2013: Porto de Galinhas (PE), coordinated by Dr. Claudia Rodhe (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco). 

2015: Brasília (DF), coordinated by Dr. Rosana Tidon (Universidade de Brasília). 

2017: Ouro Preto (MG), coordinated by Dr. Gustavo Kuhn (Universidade de Minas Gerais). 

The eleventh edition of the SEGED will take place in Pelotas (RS), in the Universidade Federal de Pelotas, where Dr. Marco Silva Gottschalk, the coordinator of the proposal, Dr. Monica Laner Blauth and Juliana Cordeiro are affiliated. This group of researchers has been studying the Taxonomy, Ecology, and Genetics of the Drosophilidae in the institution since 2009.
