GRADUATE PROFILES

Based on its principles and purposes, the Graduate Program in Education from the Federal University of Pelotas expects that Masters and Doctorate graduates are enabled to work as professors and researchers committed to the promotion of a free and socially relevant public education; who act in different contexts with an articulation of research and teaching, focusing on studies in the field of Basic and Higher Education; who have a high understanding of education and educational phenomena in their multiple dimensions (epistemological, ethical, cultural, human, scientific, and technological); who contribute to solving the problems and difficulties concerning education and social quality of life; who can contribute to the training of teachers and social educators in their particular contexts. The Program has achieved important results in its mission, which is to train new researchers and educators, contributing to the qualification of the educational field at all levels of education. The success of this policy is most evident in the total amount of funding for our research works, the number of publications in qualified journals, the participation in books published by relevant publishers in the country, the presentation of papers in national and international scientific events, the expansion and strengthening of working and research links with universities and groups of national and foreign researchers, and, finally, in the influence that the Program has had in the debates on educational policy and processes in the region, in Brazil, in Latin America, and other countries. Furthermore, assessment and monitoring show that our graduates are professionals inserted in public, state, federal, community, and private universities, not to mention American and European higher education institutions, emphasizing the broad dimension of their training. The program develops its activities mostly onsite. However, it has been exploring the alternatives available through information and communication technologies, encouraging activities such as classes and advising shared between students at our headquarters and students from other programs. Qualification boards or final defense of master and doctoral degrees have also taken place online, when needed. Especially regarding boards, the internet has allowed professors from programs of other states and countries to join us more easily, bridging the gap of distance and solving the problem of schedule compatibility and funding. Some faculty members make complementary use of online activities by using text repositories and the Moodle platform. With CEHUS (Center for Graduate Studies and Research in Human, Social, Applied Social Sciences, Arts and Language) and the acquisition of video-conferencing equipment, the alternatives for distance activities, in the form of conferences, academic research meetings, among others, take us to higher level of academic interaction.
