Ph.D. Program

The UFPel Ph.D. in Languages and Literatures is organized as a set of integrated courses. The goal is to provide the student with the improvement of the training they already have, allowing them to develop research studies that will lead to qualified professional activities in Languages and Literatures – according to the area of concentration and lines of research.

The syllabus structure of the Ph.D. Program provides a minimum course load of 56 credits – 40 in courses and 16 for the Dissertation, and is distributed as follows:

I – compulsory courses, 8 credits;

II – optional courses and/or Special Topics, 32 credits;

III – supervised dissertation: 4 credits.

Deadline for dissertation defense: 48 months (extendable to 60 months in exceptional cases)

 

Compulsory courses represent the formal and intellective support, essential for developing the dissertation. They comprise basic credits courses of the Ph.D. Program common core, which are considered to be the area of concentration.

Optional courses aim at training the student in different lines of research of the PhD Program. The Special Topics are configured as optional courses and are not regularly offered. They address specific topics that are related to the course area of concentration.

Dissertation Advising is part of the set of credits needed for the completion of the PhD studies.
