There are two modes of admission to the PPGL UFPel (Graduate Program in Languages and Literatures at Universidade Federal de Pelotas): Special or Regular Program Students.
- Admission as a Regular Student
Admission process of applicants interested in joining the Program as regular students.
Graduates in Languages and Literatures or related areas can register as applicants. The Admittance Committee is responsible for admitting these students.
The Program’s Admittance Exam will be held in two parts, also by the Admittance Committee.
Part One
An excluding written test with minimum score > 7.0. The written test on each line of research will approach the subject matters that are present in the Required Reading List specified by the Program every year.
The deaf applicant will translate the written test into Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) soon after it is finished. The test will be read in a specific room of the Graduate Program in Languages and Literatures, and it will be recorded in audio and video formats. There will be a LIBRAS interpreter during the written test, and it will be read in LIBRAS.
The written test score will consider: content development proposed (2.0 points per question); clarity of ideas presented towards the content (2.0 points per question); quality of the text regarding writing correctness and accuracy (2.0 points per question); evidence of critical and reflective analysis regarding question contents (2.0 points per question); adequate use of the specified Required Reading List and use of other books and/or authors different than those specified (2.0 points per question). The final sum of all items will be a maximum of 10. The test score is calculated using a weighted average.
Part Two
Evaluation of the candidate’s academic Curriculum Vitae documented according to the criteria established in the CV Score Sheet (Annex 2), and detailed in the CV Description Form (Annex 1). This stage is classificatory.
The following activities will be considered when scoring Curriculum Vitae:
- Academic Titles and Degrees;
- Technical-scientific publications in the last six years;
- Academic and scientific activities in the last six years;
- Professional experience in the area in the last six years.
Regarding the acceptability in the process: the written test has a weighted score of 7 points and the Curriculum Vitae has a weighted score of 3 points. The weighted average score shall be calculated as follows:
Written Test (70%) + CV Score (30%) = 10.
The number of places available is updated each year in the Application Announcement. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the total number of places in the Program are offered exclusively to quilombolas, indigenous, black, and disabled students.
A language proficiency testing certificate will not be required at the moment of registration. It may be presented along the first year in the Program. Proofs of approval in foreign language reading competency tests (English, French, German, and/or Spanish) will be accepted if they were issued or recognized by UFPel’s Center for Languages, Literatures, and Communication (international certification or certifications issued by other Higher Education Institutions are also acknowledgeable).
Proof of approval in language proficiency tests will not be required for graduates in Languages and Literatures with Majors in English, French, German, and/or Spanish, and for deaf applicants with LIBRAS (Brazilian sign language) as mother tongue and who have graduated in Brazil.
- Admission as Special Student
Admission process of applicants who are interested in attending optional courses as students on a non-degree basis.
Applicants with an undergraduate degree in Languages and Literatures or in related areas within the field of Humanities are eligible to apply for a non-degree special student status. Enrollment as a special student requires prior approval of the Program Coordination.
