The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM) at UFPel aims to train highly qualified professionals and foster science, technology, and innovation in the field of Materials Engineering. With an interdisciplinary approach and multidisciplinary applications, PPGCEM promotes scientific and technological advancements in key areas for sustainable development, directly contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program seeks to enhance professional expertise through a formal graduate education, offering a master’s degree (24 months) and a doctoral degree (48 months).

Our main research lines include:

Technology and Development of Composite Materials: Focused on creating lightweight, high-performance materials that promote sustainability and have diverse industrial applications. This research line aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, fostering the development of more sustainable and resource-efficient materials. Additionally, by contributing to more efficient infrastructure solutions for sanitation and water management, it also supports SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Technology and Development of Forensic and Environmental Materials: Involves research that aids in crime solving and environmental preservation. Aligned with SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, this research contributes to improving justice systems through innovations in forensic techniques. Furthermore, by developing materials and technologies that help monitor the environment and protect water resources, this research also reinforces SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Technology and Development of Nanostructured Materials: Explores nanomaterials with unique properties for applications in electronics, energy, and medicine. This research line fosters technological and industrial innovation, aligning with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, strengthening sustainable growth.

Technology and Development of Renewable Energies: Focuses on developing materials and technologies for clean and sustainable energy sources, contributing to SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 13: Climate Action, by creating solutions that mitigate climate impacts.

Technology and Development of Biomaterials: Involves the development of biologically sourced and biocompatible materials for applications in healthcare, regenerative medicine, and environmental preservation. Aligned with SDG 15: Life on Land, this research promotes sustainability through the use of biological resources and ecosystem conservation. Additionally, studies on biomaterials for sanitation and water treatment applications also connect to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Surface Engineering: Focuses on modifying surfaces to enhance material functionality and durability, with applications in various industrial and scientific sectors.

The research conducted at PPGCEM aligns with SDGs 6, 7, 9, 12, 13, 15, and 16, demonstrating how materials science can directly contribute to developing innovative and sustainable solutions. By integrating these research areas, PPGCEM fosters scientific progress with a strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and improving quality of life.
