2013 – Challenge yourself

The idea of a Model United Nations in Pelotas arose among International Relations students of the Federal University of Pelotas who had already participated in simulations of this type and wanted to bring this event for the academic community of Pelotas. Thus, since the beginning of 2013, a group of eleven students met themselves and projected the first edition of PelotasMUN, which took place from July 12th to 14th, 2013, in the city Pelotas, state of Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil.

Committees

In this first edition of PelotasMUN there were three simulated UN committees: the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In each committee two topics were discussed:

  • UNSC: Situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea); and Peace and Security in West Africa;
  • UNHRC: Women individual HR violations: the challenge of women empowerment in South Asia; and The Conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic and the Situation of the Civilian and Non-Combatant Population;
  • ECOSOC: Peacebulding & Post-Conflict Recovery: Haiti, East Timor and South Sudan ad hoc advisory groups; Financing for Development: The Sustainability of External Debt.
