The Behavioral Studies Laboratory of the Federal University of Pelotas in partnership with the CAPES PRINT UFPEL Project Center for Studies on Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship, in Brazil, is organizing a photo book with the theme: Insights on Ageing. Everyone is invited to send photographs of their own authorship whose scene addresses ageing and social inequality.

To participate just send your photo in JPG file, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, colour or black and white, along with a word file containing:

1. The title of the photo; 2. Full name of the author of the photo with a contact email; and 3. A 300-word statement about what the photo means and what led the author to photograph that scene. The word file must contain all information in your own language and English.

All the photos sent to the Photo Exhibition promoted by the 2019 IAPS Symposium Ageing in Place in a World of Inequalities: How to Design Healthy Cities for All (https://wp.ufpel.edu.br/placeage/evento) are included in the book.

The book will be published by the LabCom, through UFPel Editor in Brazil and be distributed free of charge to all authors and interested parties.

The Centre for Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship was harmed as we had the Project credit card cloned. Many Projects of the CAPES PRINT Program  in Brazil were in this situation. Irregularities may add up to R$ 1.8 million in research resources.

The Brazilian Federal Police is investigating the cloning of cards used by cyber thieves. The irregularities can add up to R$ 1.8 million in resources that would be used in scientific research in the country.

According to CAPES, the values are already being reversed by the card’s holders, without prejudice to the Project. 188 CAPES PRINT credit cards were affected.

The Centre for Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship got its money back.

Unfortunately the Research Mission of Professor Maria Leticia Mazzucchi Ferreira to the city of Nice in France was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The Research Mission aimed to conduct a series of interviews with visual record with the anthropologist Joël Candau, one of the most important references in the world on the theme of memory. Within the framework of the project that addresses memory and ageing, this series of interviews would seek to recover the theoretical assumptions in which Joël Candau formulated the concept of metamemory and the connections he has been making with neurosciences. The fieldwork would be carried out at the University of Nice but also in the documentary archive of the CNRS in Paris, between the 24th and 26th of March 2019. The product that would derive from this mission would be a bilingual bibliographic book in which the intellectual biography would be enriched with texts by other professionals in the interdisciplinary field, who discuss the ideas formulated by Joël Candau.

If the pandemic ends, this Mission may happen in 2022.

The Centre for Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship promoted the 2019 IAPS Symposium ‘Ageing in Place in a World of Inequalities: How to Design Healthy Cities for All’, which took place from 27 to 30 November 2019 in Brazil, in the city of Pelotas. This was an Event also promoted by the IAPS Environment and Gerontology Network.

The School of Architecture and Urbanism of Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) hosted the Symposium with the support of IAPS (Internacional Association of People-Environment Studies), PlaceAge Project, Laboratory of Behavioral Studies of UFPel and Program of Postgraduation in Architecture and Urbanism of UFPel. This is a worldwide event that takes place every two years, promoted by IAPS networks, in different countries; the last one was hosted in Tanzania, Africa.

This Symposium recognised that merely changing the built environment is not enough to create a more inclusive city for ageing because places are more than physical spaces. Viable environments are articulated through a strong sense of place, defined as the social, psychological and emotional bonds that people have with their environment. A strong sense of place results from access to support for active participation, opportunities to build and sustain social networks and it plays a significant role in the community. In contrast, a sense of exclusion or lack of opportunities to reciprocate, mediate and control is associated with alienation, isolation, and loneliness, often resulting in many health and well-being problems, particularly among the most vulnerable. Socially, the creation of age-friendly urban environments that support the sense of place is a part of successful ageing, ensuring that people can continue to contribute positively in old age, delaying the need for institutional care and reducing health costs and social assistance.

Within this context, we invited academics, researchers, professionals, and students to participate of this Symposium to discuss how to design healthy cities for all generations, responding to different environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts.

Professor Fernanda Faot, from Faculty of Dentistry of Federal University of Pelotas, was supported by the Centre for Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship to go to the UK from 26/09 to 10/10/2019.

The Mission had the objective of presentation and full access to the BIORIMA Project coordinated by Prof. Lang Tran and Vicki Stone in Edinburgh at Heriot-Watt University (Research Park, Institute of Occupational Medicine). During the Research Mission, individual training and access to preparation guides and confidential information were provided for participation in strategic stages of the project that involve the creation of methodologies for the implementation of new tests for osseointegrated implant toxicity. The focus is on clinical applicability, evidence problems and proposing innovative solutions for the development of nanomaterials.

The second Research Mission funded by the Centre for Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship supported Professor Ligia Maria Chiarelli to her travel to the UK. The objective of the Mission was established an international network on ageing and resilience studies with Oxford Brookes University (The Joint Centre for Urban Design), University of Sheffield (School of Architecture), and Heriot-Watt University (The Urban Institute). The Mission also comprised the final research meeting of the PlaceAge Project in 2019.

The Research Mission was from 24/08 to 01/09/2019 and involved the following academics:

Professors Regina Lim and Emma Wrag from Oxford Brookes University, UK.

Professors Isaiah Durosaiye and Karim Hadjri of University of Sheffield, UK.

Professors Ryan Woorych from Heriot-Watt University, Michael Murray from Keele University, and Judith Sixsmith from University of Dundee, all from the UK.

The Brazilian delegation was comprised of more eight researchers funded by the PlaceAge Project:  Professors Gisele Pereira, Eduardo Rocha, Adriana Portella and Lisandra Krebs from Federal University of Pelotas, Professors Sinval Xavier and Lorena Maia from Federal University of Rio Grande, and Research Associates Sirlene de Melo Sopeña, Tanara da Costa and Thais Libardoni from Federal University of Pelotas.

The Research Team visit the cities of Oxford, Sheffield, and Edinburgh, in the UK.

The Centre for Healthy Cities, Ageing and Citizenship funded two researchers – Professor Nirce Saffer Medvedoski and Research Associate Sirlene de Melo Sopeña, to a Mission to EDRA50 Brooklyn Conference. The event aimed to share belief in shaping urban design and changing environmental behaviour at the global scale. The conference offered one-of-a-kind networking opportunities and educational seminars tailored exclusively for those in the environmental design field. Both researchers presented authored papers at the Conference, in New York.

The Research Mission was from 21 to 30/05/2019 and also comprised of the annual research meeting of the PlaceAge Project.

Professors Adriana Portella, Celina Britto Corrêa, and Sinval Xavier also went to the Research Mission which for them was funded by the PlaceAge Project.
