There are two modes of admission to the PPGL UFPel (Graduate Program in Languages and Literatures at Universidade Federal de Pelotas): Special or Regular Program Students.
- Admission as a Regular Student
Admission process of applicants interested in joining the Program as regular students.
Graduates in Languages and Literatures or related areas with Master’s Degree can register as applicants. Admittance of these students is held by the Admittance Committee.
The Program Admittance Exam will have three parts, also held by the Admittance Committee.
Part One
Evaluation of a written version of the Dissertation Project to be developed progressively. Applicants’ minimum score must be 7.0. This is an excluding evaluation that will be carried out by a specific committee comprised of PPGL professors.
At this stage, the following assessment criteria will be considered: relevance and viability of the research proposed (3.0 points); literature review (2.0 points); objectives and methodology (2.0 points); clarity of ideas (1.5 points); aspects of correctness and accuracy (1.5 points). The final sum of all items will be a maximum of 10.
Part Two
At this stage, the dissertation project to be developed progressively is presented and evaluated by the PPGL committee. Applicants’ minimum score must be 7.0. This is an excluding evaluation that will be carried out by a specific committee comprised of PPGL professors.
At this stage, the following evaluation criteria will be considered: relevance and viability of the research proposed (3.0 points); literature review (2.0 points); objectives and methodology (2.0 points); clarity of ideas (1.5 points); aspects of correctness and accuracy (1.5 points). The final sum of all items will be a maximum of 10.
Part Three
Evaluation of the candidate’s academic Curriculum Vitae documented according to the criteria established in the CV Score Sheet (Annex 2), and detailed in the CV Description Form (Annex 1). This stage is classificatory.
The criteria established and detailed in Annex 1 will be used to calculate the Curriculum Vitae assessment score. Annex 1 must be filled in according to Annex 2 and must consider the following activities:
- Academic Titles and Degrees;
II. Technical-Scientific Publications in the last five years;
III. Academic and Scientific Activities in the last five years;
IV. Professional Experience in the field in the last five years. - For grading:
- a) Dissertation Project Assessment –3.5 points
- b) Dissertation Project Defense Assessment – 3.5 points
- c) Curriculum Vitae Review – 3.0 points
- d) Final score will be the sum of: [Dissertation Project (3.5 points) + Dissertation Project Defense (3.5 points) + CV Review (3.0 points)]
The number of places available is updated each year in the Application Announcement. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the total number of places in the Program are offered exclusively to quilombolas, indigenous, black, and disabled students.
A language proficiency testing certificate will not be required at the moment of registration. It may be presented along the first year in the Program. The Ph.D. student must prove to be proficient in a foreign language other than the one that is present in the Master’s Degree. Proofs of approval in foreign language reading competency tests (English, French, German, and Spanish) will be accepted if they were issued or recognized by UFPel’s Center for Languages, Literatures, and Communication (international certification or certifications issued by other Higher Education Institutions are also acknowledgeable).
- Admission as Special Student
Admission process of applicants who are interested in attending optional courses as students on a non-degree basis.
Applicants with a Master’s Degree in Languages and Literatures or in related areas within the field of Humanities are eligible to apply for a non-degree special student status. Enrollment as a special student requires prior approval of the Program Coordination.
