History

The Graduate Program in Languages and Literatures at Universidade Federal de Pelotas – PPGL UFPel – is currently graded 5 points in the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel’s (CAPES) evaluation; its area of concentration corresponds to studies on Language, Text, and Image. It integrates the Master’s and Ph.D. levels, and its goal is to train qualified professionals in two fields, i.e., linguistic and literary studies.

The current configuration of the Program started in 2018, when the Graduation Program in Languages and Literature from the Universidade Católica de Pelotas – PPGL UCPel – transitioned to the Universidade Federal de Pelotas. This transition merged the two Graduate Programs.

The Master’s Program of PPGL UFPel started off in March 2011. It was created in October 2010, during the 122th Meeting of the Scientific-Technical Council of Higher Education (CTC-ES). The Master’s Program in Languages and Literatures was introduced in the Universidade Federal de Pelotas when its accession to Brazil’s Support Program for Restructuring and Expansion Plans of Federal Universities (REUNI) caused the Institution to grow rapidly, with new buildings, expansion of teaching staff, pedagogical restructuring of several undergraduate curricula and creation of new ones, from 2008 on.

The Master’s Program from the UCPel PPGL started off in 1994. It was the first Master’s Program in Languages and Literatures in the southern part of Rio Grande do Sul and one of the first in the non-metropolitan area of the State. It was approved by the UCPel University Council in its meeting #148, which took place on October 20th, 1993, and was recognized by CAPES at the meeting of the Scientific-Technical Council held on September 22nd, 2000 – it was published in the Federal Official Gazette of Brazil (D.O.U.) later, on July 04th, 2001.

With a view to strengthening the higher level of education, the Graduate Program in Languages and Literatures from UCPel proposed to CAPES, in 2005, to implement the Ph.D. Program, which was approved by UCPel University Council in its regular meeting #246, which took place on April 20th, 2005. The Ph.D. Program from PPGL UCPel was recognized by CAPES at the CTC-ES meeting held in the period of September 13th-15th, 2005. Its recognition was registered in the D.O.U. on December 29th, 2005, and the Program welcomed its first students in August 2006.

Therefore, the Graduate Program in Languages and Literatures from the Universidade Federal de Pelotas has been strengthening over the years. The reorganization of its educational planning, carried out in 2018, aimed not only at accommodating the merging of the two Programs, but also to enhance its configuration.
