- He is a full professor at UFPel since 2002.
- He is a Brazilian CNPq granted researcher (PQ level 2).
- He Received the M.Sc. (2002) and Ph.D. (2007) degrees in Computer Science from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil.
- He received the B.Sc. degree (1998) in Computer Science from Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), Pelotas, Brazil.
- He is in a sabatical period of 11 months at Lisbon Univerisity (Portugal).
- He is the leader of the Group of Architectures and Integrated Circuits (GACI) and the Video Technology Research Group (ViTech).
- He was the Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies from dez/2013 to jan/2017 and Research Director at UFPel from jan/2013 to dez/2013.
- He is the current President of the Municipal Council of Science and Technology of Pelotas.
- His research interests include: 2-D and 3-D video coding, algorithmic optimization, dedicated hardware architectures, arithmetic circuits, FPGA-based design, and microelectronics.
- He has authored over 200 published papers in journals and conference proceedings.
- He served as a Program Committee member in many conferences and he also served as reviewer of the most important journals in his research area.
- He is an IEEE Senior Member and is a member of the IEEE CAS, IEEE SP and IEEE CE societies. At IEEE CAS he is a member of the Multimedia Systems & Applications Technical Committee (MSATC). He is also a member of ACM and the Brazilian societies SBC and SBMicro. He is an elected member of the SBC/CECCI Council and he is a SBMicro representative at the SBCCI Steering Committee.
