To understand the current stage of the Sociology Graduate Program (PPG Sociologia), it is necessary to highlight the history of the former Graduate Program in Social Sciences. This program began with an interdisciplinary proposal that initially encompassed different areas of scientific knowledge within the Social Sciences. Thus, in 2010, CAPES approved the Graduate Program in Political Science at the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology, and Politics at UFPel. In turn, at the end of 2011, the Graduate Program in Anthropology and Archaeology was also approved, located within the Institute of Human Sciences at UFPel.

The next step, resulting from this process of disciplinary consolidation, was taken in 2012. That year, the Graduate Program in Social Sciences changed its name to the Graduate Program in Sociology (PPG in Sociology), offering a Master’s degree. With CAPES’s 2017–2020 quadrennial evaluation, the program was accredited to open its Doctoral course, approved in September 2018 and launched in March 2019. In the most recent 2021–2024 quadrennial evaluation by CAPES, the Graduate Program in Sociology received a rating of 5.

The Program has a qualified faculty in the field of Sociology and specific research lines covering topics such as cities, the state, knowledge in contemporary society, development, labor, and the environment.

Objectives of the PPGS

The general objective of the Graduate Program in Sociology at the Federal University of Pelotas – Master’s and Doctorate – is to stimulate, promote, and guide academic work, whether in teaching, research, or outreach, primarily focused on Brazilian reality – national and regional aspects (with special emphasis on the Southern Cone) – as well as Latin American and international contexts, from a sociological perspective open to dialogue, particularly with other Social Sciences. In this sense, the program seeks to train academically qualified researchers in the field of Sociology.

The specific objectives of the PPGS are:

I. To maintain ongoing efforts to consolidate a team of sociologists capable of developing research projects focused, on the one hand, on Brazil’s developmental trends in their socio-political and economic aspects, and on the other, on sociocultural processes that transcend the borders of Mercosur countries.

II. To consolidate the formation of research centers linked to specific sociological fields, fostering integration between students and faculty around research groups to promote the collective production of knowledge. However, this does not imply the absence of dialogue with other Social Sciences, since interdisciplinary dialogue is understood as a central characteristic of contemporary scientific knowledge.

III. To establish academic cooperation ties, such as student and faculty exchanges, new research and outreach experiences, and knowledge exchange with Brazilian higher education institutions – with special attention to those in the Southern Cone – aiming to strengthen students’ presence in reference centers and universities in Brazil and abroad, under the “sandwich” internship modality during their doctoral studies.

IV. To promote regional integration of the PPGS through agreements and exchanges with Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. This effort aims to establish lasting cooperation ties that strengthen regional potential – in the Southern Cone – in its social, cultural, and political dimensions.

Funding Sources

The PPGS annually obtains scholarships for its students provided by the funding agencies CNPq, CAPES, and FAPERGS. It also receives resources from CAPES’s Graduate Support Program (PROAP) to support academic activities of faculty and students. In addition to three postdoctoral fellowships, the PNPD provides financial resources for equipment and materials.

Learn more:

<p
