We examine the evidence for three\u00a0hypotheses about potential synergies between BF and pronaf: Households that are beneficiaries of Bolsa Familia and pronaf will have more success (1) increasing productivity in agriculture, (2) increasing agricultural income, and (3) reducing child labor in agriculture, than families\u00a0that just receive one type of intervention (BF or pronaf) or families that do not receive any intervention. We use a difference in differences methodology with municipal level fixed effects to\u00a0investigate if municipalities where BF and pronaf incidences increased more were associated\u00a0with greater increases of productivity and income and a greater decrease of child labor. The\u00a0models were estimated with municipal level data on farms under 500 hectares drawn from the\u00a01995-96 and 2006 Agricultural Censuses in Brazil. The results suggest that significant relationships exist across programs and with the outcome variables. There is evidence that supports the\u00a0hypothesis of positive program synergies for land productivity and income. We find no significant synergies, however, between BF and pronaf for child labor. The econometric analysis of BF\u00a0and pronaf is complemented by results from approximately 30 interviews with important stakeholders of rural development projects in Brazil. We find substantial agreement about the obstacles to poverty reduction that result from a lack of policy coordination.
