\nA model of the spread of a disease through a population with different age groups<\/p>\n

Resumo:
\nThe way in which a disease spreads through a population can depend on the ages of the individuals in that population. In many cases older members of the population are more likely to become seriously ill or die from an infectious disease.<\/p>\n

The standard SIR model for the spread of a disease is extended to consider a population split into different age groups and includes features such as births and deaths from causes other than the disease being considered. The model will be used to investigate how varying the parameters for different age groups affect the spread of the disease through the population. In addition, the model will also be modified to incorporate how a vaccination programme can affect the spread of the disease. The methods discussed will be illustrated with a number of typical numerical examples.<\/p>\n
