This initiative consolidates academic cooperation between the two institutions and seeks to strengthen dialogue across disciplines, cultures, and hemispheres.

Organised by the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at UEA and the Centro de Letras e Comunicação at UFPel, the seminar series will address contemporary debates surrounding the Anthropocene, the epoch that characterises the profound, planetary-scale impact of human activity on the Earth system. Far from being restricted to scientific and environmental domains, the Anthropocene has generated wide-ranging intellectual and cultural responses that resonate in literature, the arts, the media, and, more broadly, the humanities.

The series has been designed to engage postgraduate students and faculty in discussions about how artistic and cultural practices contribute to critical understandings of global transformations. Particular attention will be given to perspectives emerging from the Global South, Indigenous communities, and younger generations, all of which are essential to broadening the parameters of knowledge production and questioning dominant structures of power, such as those associated with capitalism and colonialism.

Each session will feature research in literature, creative writing, visual media, communications, and related fields. Topics will include, but are not limited to:

Creativity and responses to climate change and environmental crises, including artistic interventions that reframe the concepts of the Anthropocene, Capitalocene, and Chthulucene.Reflections on the field of Environmental Humanities as an interdisciplinary framework for critical analysis.

Artistic and cultural responses to ecological grief, including species extinction, habitat destruction, and the disappearance of traditional ways of life.

Cultural approaches to risk, particularly with regard to food and water security, rights to safe living environments, and threats arising from violence and displacement.

The intersections of politics, activism, and art in addressing planetary challenges.

Methodological and theoretical approaches from the humanities to these critical issues.

The programme will be structured around four online seminars, to be held at 10:00 a.m. (Brazil time) and 2:00 p.m. (UK time), on the following dates:

18 September 2025

16 October 2025

6 November 2025

4 December 2025

The seminar series will be jointly coordinated by Professor Eduardo Marks de Marques and Associate Professor Karina Aveyard, Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research (Arts & Humanities) at UEA. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing international research partnerships and to strengthening postgraduate training in the humanities. By offering a structured space for dialogue, the initiative seeks to develop ongoing collaboration between UEA and UFPel, supporting the circulation of ideas and reinforcing the internationalisation of postgraduate research. The series aims to consolidate emerging areas of inquiry and to provide postgraduate students with the opportunity to participate in debates that are both global in scope and attentive to local and situated perspectives.

The seminars are open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, and the wider international academic community.
