In this lecture the working principles and application of this microwave cavity are discussed. Contrary to inductively coupled plasmas, high-power MIPs, such as found in the Hammer cavity are operated with nitrogen or even air as the sole plasma gas. The implication of using nitrogen as plasma gas will be discussed, as well as inter-element matrix effects.
