Mental health problems in childhood and adolescence are common. For example, 18.1% of 12-17 year-olds met DSM-5 criteria for Major Depression in a recent study in the United States.1 In another study, 83% of participants followed from childhood to young adulthood met criteria for a mental disorder at some point in their lives.2 If untreated, these psychiatric conditions can be debilitating, often disrupting social relationships and educational progress.3-6 Such issues can even be deadly, with suicide emerging as the leading cause of death among adolescents ages 14 to 15 years, the second leading cause of death among adolescents ages 15 [...]
While substantial work has documented disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder (BD) in adults, this important area has not been explored in pediatric BD. It is critical that we quantify inequities in treatment outcomes, so that we can better serve the needs of all children and adolescents. In this issue of the Journal,1 Fontanella and colleagues used a large database of Medicaid records to assess how often youth with newly-diagnosed BD received guideline-concordant treatment (ie, mood stabilizing medication and psychotherapy). [...]
Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), formerly known as sluggish cognitive tempo, is characterized by hypo-activity or slowed behavior, mental fogginess or confusion, excessive sleepiness, and daydreaming. CDS and the predominantly inattentive (IN) presentation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently co-occurring though separable constructs, each associated with unique constellations of functional impairments. The current study aims to identify their shared and divergent neurobiological correlates. [...]
We often talk with children and adolescents about hope as a way to instill a sense of future. Yet, for those who survived a traumatic brain injury, hearing someone speak the hope word may not always bring the optimism needed to thrive in the years and decades to come. I know because I was one of the estimated 2.3 million children who was diagnosed with a brain injury. On January 20th, I became a 44-year pediatric survivor of a severe cerebral contusion who went on to complete two master degrees and establish a 30-year career as a social worker and [...]
Immigrant youth are a large population in the U.S, yet there are limited studies characterizing mental health and unique individual-level risk and protective factors in early adolescent immigrants. Previous studies reveal variable associations between immigration and psychopathology. We aimed to characterize minority stressors, protective factors, and mental health among adolescent immigrants. [...]
