No interior desta bact\u00e9ria, o material gen\u00e9tico injetado comanda a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de c\u00f3pias iguais a ele, al\u00e9m da produ\u00e7\u00e3o de novas c\u00e1psulas de prote\u00ednas. Diferem funcionalmente dos integrantes da imunidade adaptativa por reagirem de maneira r\u00e1pida, talvez em poucas horas, durante a invas\u00e3o do organismo por v\u00edrus e bact\u00e9rias. As c\u00e9lulas NK\u00a0s\u00e3o definidas como c\u00e9lulas citot\u00f3xicas n\u00e3o espec\u00edficas que s\u00e3o importantes na resposta precoce \u00e0s c\u00e9lulas tumorais e infec\u00e7\u00f5es virais.As atividades das c\u00e9lulas NK s\u00e3o reguladas por meio da ativa\u00e7\u00e3o e inibi\u00e7\u00e3o das mol\u00e9culas receptoras expressas em sua superf\u00edcie celular. As mol\u00e9culas receptoras de c\u00e9lulas NK s\u00e3o subdivididas em duas categorias diferentes: receptores NK tipo\u00a0imunoglobulinas\u00a0e receptores NK do tipo C, semelhante \u00e0 lectina.
