Using machine learning in source coding promises faster innovation cycles, as well as better adaptation to novel data modalities and nonlinear distortion metrics. For example, image codecs can now be end-to-end optimized to perform best for specific types of images, by simply replacing the training set. They may be designed to minimize a given perceptual metric, or in fact any differentiable perceptual loss function, without the need to evaluate it during encoding. Graduado em Engenharia Eletrica pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul &#8211; UFRGS (1991), mestre em Engenharia El\u00e9trica pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas &#8211; Unicamp (1994) e doutor em Microeletr\u00f4nica pelo Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble &#8211; INPG, Fran\u00e7a (1998). P\u00f3s-doutorado na University of British Columbia, Canad\u00e1 (2010-2011). Cientista-chefe na empresa Nangate Inc., Herlev &#8211; Dinamarca, de set\/2005 a jul\/2006. Projetista de circuitos integrados no Centro Tecnol\u00f3gico para Inform\u00e1tica &#8211; CTI, em Campinas ? SP, de ago\/1991 a jun\/1994. Realizou seus estudos de doutorado no Laborat\u00f3rio TIMA, em Grenoble &#8211; Fran\u00e7a, sob a supervis\u00e3o de Bernard Courtois e Jean-Michel Karam. Trabalhou como pesquisador visitante na Pontif\u00edcia Universidade Cat\u00f3lica de Campinas &#8211; PUC-Campinas, em 1999, com apoio da ag\u00eancia de fomento Fapesp &#8211; SP. Docente do Departamento de Inform\u00e1tica Aplicada, no Instituto de Inform\u00e1tica da UFRGS, desde jan\/2000. Coordenou o laborat\u00f3rio de pesquisa Nangate-UFRGS Research Lab, de ago\/2006 a jul\/2009, dentro do conv\u00eanio de colabora\u00e7\u00e3o em P&amp;D entre a UFRGS e a empresa dinamarquesa Nangate. Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Microeletr\u00f4nica no bi\u00eanio 2000-2002, diretor administrativo na gest\u00e3o 2002-2004, vice-presidente nas gest\u00f5es 2008-2010 e 2010-2012, e membro do conselho desta sociedade cient\u00edfica no per\u00edodo 1999-2000, 2005-2008 e 2017-2020. Editor da revista cient\u00edfica Journal of Integrated Circuits and Systems (JICS) SBMicro\/SBC, 2021-2022.
