Traditionally, a battery is used for this. However, being able to store energy on a capacitor would enable a lot of small, low-power devices that need to harvest their energy from the environment. In this tutorial, I will first introduce the concept of high-density capacitive energy storage. Then, I will discuss in detail how a switched-capacitor DC-DC converter is the most critical building block in such an energy storage system. I will explain how it is designed, what are the performance limits and what the current state-of-the-art is. For the energy storage application specifically, I will introduce a design methodology. This tutorial will thus cover the basics of switched-capacitor DC-DC converter design as well as a specific approach for energy storage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"justify\"><strong>Speaker&#8217;s Biography:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Filip Tavernier received the MSc degree in electrical engineering and the PhD degree in engineering science from KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, in 2005 and 2011, respectively. From 2011 to 2014, he was a Senior Fellow with the Microelectronics Group, European Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva, Switzerland. From 2014 to 2015, he was a Post-Doctoral Researcher with the Department of Electrical Engineering, ESAT-MICAS, KU Leuven, where he is Assistant Professor since 2015. His main research interests include circuits for optical communication, data converters, power converters, and chips for radiation environments.
