This study investigated the influence of different levels of alfalfa hay supplementation on the growth performance and biological efficiency of Eudrilus eugeniae reared in a substrate composed of fruit and vegetable residues. Earthworm growth was significantly influenced by supplementation levels, resulting in distinct patterns of weekly weight gain, accumulated biomass, and relative growth rate (RGR). Intermediate inclusion levels (T3 and T4) promoted the highest biomass production (73.2–74.1 g) and the highest RGR values (0.0906–0.0909 g g−1 week−1), whereas excessive supplementation (T5) reduced performance, yielding values similar to the control. Statistical analysis using ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test confirmed significant differences among treatments. These results demonstrate that alfalfa hay supplementation directly affects biomass production and biological efficiency, highlighting the importance of substrate formulation for optimizing performance in vermiculture.

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biteb.2026.102888

Liciane Oliveira da Rosa, Alvaro Renato Guerra Dias Abstract Vermiculture is a sustainable approach to organic matter management, in which substrate composition plays a fundamental role in biological performance.
