Lines of Research

Memory and Identity

This line of research is based on different conceptions of memory, from collective to individual and explores the intersection of memory and culture as expressed through different forms (material, visual, and auditory), and spaces (museums, memorials, archives, documentation centers). Also contained within this line are studies involving the relation between memorial claims and the search for recognition, contemporary processes involved in conflicts of memory, victimization and excess of memorials, the responsibility of memory and the role of the State, memorial institutions, political memory, obliteration and forgetting of memories, traditions and social usage of the past, transmission of traditional knowledge and practices, intangible cultural heritage, urban and rural industrial heritage, and memories of the workplace.

Institutions of memory and archive management

In this line of research academic works are produced dealing with issues such as: the discussion of the role of memory institutions in the area of cultural heritage, localization, inventory, study, planning, and execution of projects related to the conservation of archives, in their diverse forms, that are considered as cultural heritage. This line of research also produces studies on legal and constitutional protection and safeguarding of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.  Also contemplated, are studies on the applicability of conservation procedures and safe-keeping of archives in museums and cultural institutions, as well as  the methodology of putting conservation initiatives in to place within institutional environments (financing, inter-institutional relations in the public, private, NGO, and civil society sectors).

Heritage and the city

This line involves research with emphasis on the city as creator of memory and identity, associating issues of urbanization, social territory, and symbolic production of space through the processes of declaration of cultural heritage and affirmations of identity. The city is conceived as a cultural landscape where representations of memory are perceived in a myriad of ways by the viewer. Themes such as preservation of architectural heritage, urban structures, local heritage, conversation and preservation of architectural heritage, environmental planning, economic activities within heritage areas, businesses and historic city centers, and landscape ecology all form part of this line of research.

Memory and Heritage policy in MERCOSUR

In this line of research emphasizes the history of cultural heritage public policies in Brazil as well as in the MERCOSUR region, problematizing contexts and situations related to contemporary issues. Research on new concepts of heritage, its treatment in the arena of public policy that link memory and heritage in MERCOSUR, wide reflections on Brazilian and Hispano-American legislation relating to preservation of culture. This line also includes research on memory and archive policies in MERCOSUR, cultural heritage management agencies in MERCOSUR, placing emphasis on the network of meanings and social practices involved in cultural heritage. This line examines heritage as a political expression of memory and as a medium of official memory possessing special dynamics in the MERCOSUR region due to the processes of reclaiming of memory of the recent past, especially as related to civic-military dictatorships, the search for truth, and Human Rights.
